IZNIK TILES:
Tiles produced in Iznik from mid 14th century to the end of the 17th century are called "Iznik tiles".
Tile making in the region had its golden era during 16th & 17th centuries and unique tiles were produced. Iznik tiles were used as prominent decorative elements in Ottoman architecture. Tile art experienced a great improvement during this period.
Famous traveler Evliya Çelebi, who visited Iznik in 17th century, mentions in his book that there were more than 300 shops tile kilns in the district.
In Iznik tiles; flower motifs such as tulips, hyacinths, pomegranates and carnations are frequently used. Blue, turquoise, green and red are the most frequent colors.
