This pendant combines two gems: a natural golden Ethiopian opal and a dark green crystal of chrome diopside. The opal measures 8.1 x 6.0 mm and weighs in at 0.88 carats. The diopside measures 1.04 x 0.20 inches (26.3 x 5.1 mm) and weighs in at 8.9 carats.
Ethiopian Welo opal has made a huge mark shops on the gem trade since it was brought to market in 2008. Famed for its great durability and amazing fire, these stones come in a wide range of colors from colorless and transparent through whites, greys, browns and through to true black. This stone is a nice example of a golden opal with a yellow base. It also shows beautiful play of color, throwing off sparks of green as it is turned in the light.
Below it is a dark green crystal of chrome diopside. Diopside is a member of the pyroxene group, cousin to hypersthene, kunzite and jadeite. It is a relatively hard and durable rock-forming mineral which only rarely forms as nice crystals. When it does, they can be very beautiful, especially when a touch of the element chromium is mixed in. These stones take on a very rich green hue. This is a great example, with a deep green color and excellent crystal form.
