Product code: Maple Bowl With shops Walnut Bowtie Inlays

Internal stresses tore this piece apart soon after I began carving it. Rather than scrap it, I reinforced the splits with black walnut bowtie inlays. I carved the bowl by hand with a combination of hand and power tools. I salvaged it from a piece of a downed silver maple tree, and insect holes and staining add visual interest to shops the piece and remind us of its life cycle. Because the bowl is hand-carved, its surface possesses small waves and asymmetries. The base of the bowl is slightly raised to create a shadow line between the bowl and the surface it rests upon. The bowl is 17” long, 8.2” wide and 3” high. It is finished with multiple coats of Danish oil, sanded between coats to create a soft luster and ultrasmooth finish. Please note that carving exposed parts of two of the bowtie inlays on the outside of the bowl. Please see the detail photo for the largest of these exposures. The bowl is intended to be decorative, and the finish is not waterproof or guaranteed food safe, however the bowl is suitable for holding fruit, nuts, candy or similar items. The bowl is initialed and dated on the bottom.
