Antique Travel Strop in wood and leather from Napoleonic era. French straight razor storage box.
This is a Crenet Fils shaving box, without markings. Crenet Fils manufactured various quality items such as razors, stones, cutlery and general toiletry objects between 1810 and 1830.
This box strop has a cover that pivots revealing a cavity to store up to 2 straight razor. There is a leather strop on one side and smoother honing leather on the other.
The box measures: 26 cm (10 1/8 inches) long, including handle by 5 cm (1 7/8 inches) wide.
This is a rare antique item. It shops is in excellent condition, with only some minor signs of use on the leather, particularly the stropping leather (see pictures 3 & 8). There are some nicks to the honing side leather (see picture 4). The top pivots and slots back easily.
What is stropping? Stropping helps renew a slightly dull edge as well as produce a very sharp edge after sharpening. "A razor strop (or razor strap) is a flexible strip of leather, canvas, denim fabric, balsa wood, or other soft material, used to straighten and polish the blade of a straight razor, a knife, or a woodworking tool like a chisel. In many cases stropping re-aligns parts of the blade edge that have been bent out of alignment." ~ Wikipedia
