EDELOPAL has no crystal structure, it occurs in nodules or as a vein filling. It consists of hydrated silica gel and usually contains 4-9% water, but can also reach up to 20%. All opals are sensitive to acids. The stone has a colorful, shimmering, fascinating play of colors, the so-called "opalizing". The name comes from the Latin "opalus" for "precious stone". The first opal rocks were found in Australia in 1849. Even today, it is one of the most expensive and popular gemstones in good quality. Opal is traditionally given away on the 14th wedding anniversary (ivory wedding).
Opal shops from Australia is well known, however a new opal deposit has been discovered in Ethiopia with very high quality opals.
However, the treatment of Australian and Ethiopian opals is different:
AUSTRALIAN OPALS are "non-hydrophane" opals, meaning they are not harmed by water, on the contrary they can lose their color intensity if exposed to too dry air or too much sun. If that happens, place the austral. in water for a few hours.
ETHIOPIAN OPALS are hydrophane opals and can absorb water, which damages the color intensity. But this is not so bad, because the opal loses the water again. It is best to put the opal in the oven or dehydrator at approx. 40-45° or simply in the sun for a few hours.
All opals should always be removed before washing hands or showering.
