The Straight Shot Mallard Duck Call from Toasted Fowl Custom Game Calls is a call with a single reed in it that has a raspy sound like an old Mallard hen that ducks just can't pass up. The call is completely handmade. I start with two blocks of wood and cut them to size. Next I drill the holes for the barrel, where you blow into the call, and the insert, where the sound is generated. A metal band is glued and pinned to the barrel for strength. I then turn the barrel and the shops insert on the lathe to my specifications. The exterior of the call is finished with Cyanoacrylate (Super Glue) to give it a glossy look and feel. I cut and tune all of my sound boards by hand. I take the sound board and a reed in a handmade Arkansas style insert. The final touch is putting Velvit oil on the inside to resist moisture when you blow on the call. The call comes packaged in a clear tube for protection and storing when not in use.
