Luchow's German Cookbook is the next best thing to visiting this classic New York establishment, which closed in the early 1980's, after operating for a century. Its proximity to theaters and Tammany Hall made it a popular establishment for entertainers and politicians alike. The book touts that "the recipes represent the first collection of authentic and purely German dishes to be published in America. Hundreds of recipes are complimented with illustrations by Ludwig Bemelmans, who also wrote the introduction. Originally published in 1952, this 1965 reprint is shops inscribed on the dedication page by author Jan Mitchell, "To Rose Marie & Earl, with my affection and devotion, Jan Mitchell, Jan 69."
