As the particles settle they stack into a close packed hexagon or cubic pattern to allow light to refract and reflect through the stone.

Sterling opal color is from light reflection, and no Dyes are used to artificially produce color.

These opals are stabilized with a hard resin, and shops will have the same hardness of natural opal and is a 5- 5.5 on Mohs scale.

Sterling Opal has been classified by the GIA as a true Synthetic opal.
