Please do not confuse gold-filled with gold plate because the difference is huge.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GOLD-FILLED AND GOLD PLATED
SOLID GOLD, of course, makes an exquisite piece of jewelry. Gold-filled is the next level and is an amazing, economical, quality alternative to solid gold. Gold plating or vermeil is the lower level and these items tend to tarnish and can often times turn the skin green.
GOLD FILL is several actual layers of gold-pressure bonded to another metal. This is the main feature that forms the basis of differentiation. In order for a piece to be classified as gold-filled it has to be composed of approximately a tenth of gold.
GOLD-FILLED is much more valuable and tarnish resistant than gold plate. It does not flake off, rub off or turn colors. As a matter of fact, anyone who can wear gold can wear gold filled without worries of any allergic reaction to the jewelry. Gold-filled items are water-resistant. This means you can shower and wash items with the jewelry pieces on with little to no damage.
GOLD PLATE / VERMEIL refers to the process of coating a very thin layer of gold on the surface of any metal such as brass or silver. The process involves a chemical treatment. Gold plating does not make any item resistant to water. It is actually advised to keep gold plated items away from water. This is because the thin layers of gold will soon chip off after exposure to water.
Thank you for your support of Small Business. When you purchase “handmade” you aren't just buying a piece of jewelry, you are buying a piece of wearable art from an artisan.
