Red Agate, Rhodonite, on Holly, 18" long

This piece of holly wood was harvested ritually on the new moon before Samhain in 2019 with the appropriate offerings. This was cut from a living tree with its permission. I hand peeled and sanded the wood, made four applications of linseed oil and two applications of hand ground frankincense mixed with olive oil.

Holly: Many believe it originated with the ancient Celtic druids -- priestly prophets of early Britain, Ireland and France -- who saw the holly as a symbol of the sun that could be brought indoors to enlighten the gloomy winter seasons. Holly wood makes very good wands which can be used to banish unwanted entities, and command evoked spirits.

In Celtic mythology the Holly King ruled over the half of the year from the summer to the winter solstice. At this time the Oak King defeated the Holly King to rule for the time until the summer solstice again. These two aspects of the Nature god were later incorporated into Mummers' plays performed around Yuletide. The Holly King was depicted as a powerful giant of a man covered in holly leaves and branches, and wielding a holly bush as a club.

Holly is associated with Saturn by Nicholas Culpepper, and the Mars and the element of fire according to other sources.
