shops This beautiful design evokes the quiet night watch of a dedicated healer making the rounds in a military hospital with many damaged young soldiers in great need of a caring nurse. The lamp, as a symbol of wisdom or healing has many ancient antecedents, however it is most commonly seen as a sign of nursing; a tribute to Florence Nightingale, also known as the “Lady with the Lamp”. Florence served as a military nurse during the Crimean War in the 1850's, when battlefield medicine was seen not so much as a necessity, but an afterthought. Conditions were so unfavorable there that the death toll from disease and infection was ten times higher than that of combat injuries. Nightingale helped to rectify this problem and later went on to establish one of the first schools of nursing in England. As a social reformer, she transformed the practice of nursing by standardizing the training of nurses, and helped to bring about the modern profession of the Nurse.
