A fabulous antique French wicker basket / hamper full of rustic charm and very unique. Well made.
Strong and robust. It was probably once used to transport animals purchased in the local market. It has a carrying handle of thick woven wicker, but the hinges have long gone so will need to be replaced; currently there is string holding the lid on on one side. Perhaps a few strips of leather to tie the lid to the base? There are gaps in the front of the basket where the animal/bird could see out of and to allow air flow. The four corner supports are made of wood. Closure is by means of a birch twig which is fed through two raised loops of wicker. To open, simply remove the twig by sliding it out one end. Lovely functional basket with loads of character.

A lovely lidded basket to use anywhere in the home. Can also be used to store balls of wool or craft materials (knitting needles, fabric, etc). A lovely basket / hamper to use in a shop display, filled with freshly baked bread or other goodies. Would also make a greater planter (add a few ceramic plant pots inside); lovely for the patio or conservatory. Can be used as a picnic hamper too.

CONDITION
It is in a very good antique condition for its age; the original 'hinge' devices are missing and expertly tied string holds the lid on. See photos. Quite dusty inside but I will vacuum thoroughly before shipping.
