Where is larimar mined - Larimar or blue pectolite is an extremely rare gemstone. It has been found only in one location: a mountainous, relatively inaccessible area in the province of Barahona in the Dominican Republic.


When was larimar first found - LARIMAR was 1st discovered for mining and marketing in 1974. Although, many of the inhabitants of the Dominican Republic and their ancestors were long aware of the stone, the first mention of the stone was in a request to mine Larimar (not its name back then) in 1916.


How does larimar form - The word Larimar was created by Mendez, who combined his daughter's name Larissa with the Spanish world for sea, Mar. ... The river deposited them in the shops Caribbean Sea, some pieces washed up on the seashore by waves. The stone is formed when hot gases push crystallized minerals up though volcanic 'tubes'.


Geological properties of larimar - Mineral formation : pectolite with cobalt or blue pectolite. Color : white to deep blue, semi transparent to opaque blue, mottled with white. Hardness: 4.5 - 5 (mohs). Specific gravity: 2.81. Refractive index: 1.599 - 1.628. 


As larimar is a soft stone, rough handling, heat and chemicals should be avoided. It is for this reason designers tend to use larimar in necklace and earring designs over bracelets and rings to help avoid unnecessary impact that can cause damage to the stone. To clean larimar, use warm, soapy water and dry thoroughly. Steamers and ultrasonic cleaners should be avoided. Store larimar away from harder stones and other materials that could cause dents and other surface imperfections. A soft pouch is recommended.
