A Very Pretty Antique, Hand Carved Sardonyx Shell Cameo Brooch/Pendant Necklace. Circa 1870's Italian
This wonderfully detailed cameo depicts a noble woman. She is festooned in a draped fabric, flowers in her hair, and very beautiful high relief, detailed ringlets and hair. She's in profile looking to the left which a rarer profile than a right facing cameo. The shell is very finally carved and extremely thin and transparent. It's set in Coin or Sterling Silver and unmarked which is not uncommon for Victorian jewelry from the 1870's to 1890's
These lovely cameo pieces were produced in the mid-19th century shops to the early 20th century. Intended as tourist jewelry to be purchased for a grand tour souvenir from Italy. They usually depict nobility, goddesses and muses in Greek and Roman culture.
Hallmarks: there's a small symbol on the pin but no legible marks. This setting and chain tests as Sterling.

Measurement: Approx. Brooch/Pendant is 1-3/8 inches by a little over 1-1/8 inches at the widest. Chain necklace is 19 inches long
