Product code: W & Co. Hanley shops Alaska Red Transferware Dinner Plate ca. 1886-1892
This red transferware plate is a stunning example of the pieces created during the aesthetic movement. The design has a Japanese influence with crisscrossed thorned branches creating a frame to the center of the plate that depicts an old water mill within a circle with points set at a seemingly N, W, E & S compass. This scene is surrounded by apple blossoms giving it a botanical appearance. The rim of the plate continues the crisscross theme with appears to be berries at the center of each x that is formed in the design. W & Co. aka Whittaker & Co. operated between 1886 - 1892 in a factory located in Hanley, Stoke on Trent. This plate is extremely rare & in exceptional condition, crazing is noted as well as manufacturer paint smudges & mishaps. The plate has what appears to possibly be some type of handling nicks or possibly spots where there was a glazing bubble along the rim. They do not appear to be chips when viewed through a magnifying glass Measuring shops 10" in dia.
