1969 REPRINT, 500 Copies
This 1960's REPRINT Fairy's Pie advertising booklet for New England Mince Meat by T shops E Dougherty is wonderful and in excellent condition. It is pretty much immaculate. I bought it at the big Antique Show in Brimfield, Ma in 1991 and the dealer assured me that it was the original late 1800's booklet. I always wondered how it could be in such excellent condition. Just this year I researched again and discovered that this Fairy's Pie booklet is a REPRINT from 1969 by the FORD PRESS, a Hong Kong company who has reprinted a number of old paper items. That said, it is supposed to be printed with the printing style and the Chromalithographs just like the old one was. There was a limited number of these Fairy Pie Booklets, which was 500, so this is also RELATIVELY RARE. Although it is not really a Halloween booklet, there are several pics that remind me of that holiday, Thanksgiving and the fall in general. There are 12 Chromolithographs and the pics are truly amazing! It is a lovely item to display and it looks really old, just in wonderful vintage condition. I have also packed it away for most of the last 31 years!! There is really nothing wrong with this booklet. It is pretty much pristine other than a few tiny flaws. The vibrant colors are amazing and their are no stains, tears, or odors or anything that takes away from the beauty of the little booklet. The pictures are just exquisite and reflect the style of the late 1800's. There is a little stray mark here or there but I think it is just a tiny mark from the printing process and it is not at all noticeable. There is a tiny crinkle on the back that is miniscule and a slight bend on the back on the bottom. In the middle of the book there is a tiny, tiny bit of discoloration from the staple, but you don't see that on any other page. The above mentioned are all tiny, really picky things, but I Iike to disclose everything. The booklet is clean, bright, very crisp and sturdy. The book has the front cover and the back cover and 20 pages in between. It is 4 1/4" up and down and 4" across. It is an amazing piece of vintage Holiday ephemera! This is just about mint and it is a joy to go through the pages and look at all the beautifully, detailed pictures. The story is also really neat!
The outside looks like a pie (a mince meat pie) and it is embossed with the title Fairy's Pie. Inside there are 2 pages on each side, one being an explanation or a story and the other features a beautiful Victorian picture. The inside cover talks about mince pies and how their NE mince meat is made. The next two pages show Mother Goose and the Pied Piper and a story is on the opposite page. The next two pages show Mother Goose and tell more of the story. The next two continues the story about Mother Goose and the children and I love this picture of her on her broomstick with all the kids. Then two more pages continuing the story. Then we have a patriotic page which states, " The children ate and ate and ate and what do you think they grew into? Why, just what all good children grow into who eat mince pie that's made from Dougherty's New England condensed Mince Meat, splendid American citizens!"
That is the end of the story and the next page shows a scene reminiscent of Thanksgiving, turkey and winter. Then you actually see a Thanksgiving table on the next page and an apple where they say mince meat reigns over all the fruit pies!! Then they show a fruit bounty picture and cowboys who rustle the cattle for the mince meat. Then we see a scene from a spice country far away and it describes ships sailing to get these spices for the mince meat. The last page is an ad for the mince meat and the back page says everyone should forgo cheap imitations because the NE mince meat is the best!!
